Virtual Program: Silly Stories

 For a virtual storytime this week, I read some pretty silly books and showed a silly flannelboard. Of course, this was a silly storytime theme!

For my first laugh-at-loud book, I chose Chicken Big by Keith Graves. What makes this book so silly is how all the other animals in the story can't be convinced Chicken is really a chicken. This is a good one to read out loud with funny pictures.

To take a short break in between stories, I told a rhyming story of Mr. Lou and his growing mustache. I find this gets the kids laughing in storytime at the library, so hopefully they were laughing at home when watching. Mr. Lou's mustache goes from tiny small to hilariously big. 

The second and final story I read was Because I Stubbed My Toe by Shawn Byous. This was a short enough story that is about a boy who stubbed his toe and causes a silly chain reaction in his town. 

For this virtual storytime, I didn't show any craft because our first book is on the longer side and I was already around the 15 minute mark, but there will definitely be more craft demonstrations in the future. 

Silly storytimes are the best!

Book of the Month: Underwear!

So I thought since I chose a somewhat sad and touching book last month, that I would go with something totally silly this time. For this month's Book of the Month, I chose Underwear! by Jenn Harney.

Summary: So begins the dialogue between a tired bear dad and a rambunctious bear cub who would rather play with his tighty whities than get into bed. Undewear makes great hair. It can even turn one into a superbear, or a goggle-wearing swimming bear. But beware of a big scare! Rhymes, homonyms, and conjunctions abound in this book that could be used to teach reading, but its primary purpose is to make bedtime fun.

Ages: 2-5 years

"Stop right there! You should be wearing underwear!!!"

What I loved about this book is it took a boring subject about learning how to put on underwear and made it hilarious for both parent and child to read. Of course I enjoyed the silly rhyming in this book and the cute pictures. It was also nice how this was all tied-in with bedtime. If you're looking for a funny bedtime book that you wouldn't mind reading over and over, here's the book for you. 

Family Storytime: Silly Stories

This smaller group did very well listening to the silly stories today but were a bit shy following along with the activities. We still had a fun time and they loved scaring everyone with their spider crafts. I liked how this theme allowed for so many books and activities, but it was hard narrowing everything down. Glad there was a lot of ideas and this theme is perfect to throw in some new picture books.

We read Aaaarrgghh! Spider! by Lydia Monks, The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli, and This Book Just Ate My Dog! by Richard Byrne.

We did our bean bag song, read three books, and added color balloons to the flannelboard for National Library Week and then fed Crocodile numbers instead of watermelon seeds.

The spider craft was one of their favorite crafts so far and it brought out the sillies in them!
